One Frame at a Time: My Journey to Better Photography

I’ve always had an interest in photography. There is just an artistry to capturing the perfect moment in time. Ever since I got my first 110 Kodak Pocket Camera, I pictured myself as a great photographer, taking the most incredible pictures. My imagination was far better than reality. When it comes to photography, I am definitely NOT an artist!

Speaking of which, do you remember the pocket camera? It had that drop-in film cartridge with both a supply and take-up chamber, so no rewinding was needed. It also came with a flip flash that had six stacked bulbs on it and cost a fortune. The photo quality was poor and often looked grainy. Granted, I’m sure today people would see that as a cool, nostalgic visual effect.

My mother didn’t always appreciate the wannabe photographer images that I tried to over-stylize. The film and the flash cubes were expensive. I usually ended up with the worst photos trying to capture something in motion or cutting off the heads of people who were standing still. I also took pictures of the sun through leaves, which basically looked like a bright fireball, or blurry, unrecognizable close-ups of flowers. But I tried.

Our family also had a Polaroid camera, which at least gave quick feedback on your photo failures, but I didn’t get to use it very often. My track record with photography meant that I couldn’t be trusted around a camera that used such expensive film.

Even though I wasn’t the best photographer, I would upgrade to a new camera whenever I could convince my parents or grandparents to get me one for my birthday or Christmas. I couldn’t be deterred!

I still take blurry photos, which I rarely delete, even with the invention of digital cameras. The photos on my cell phone are abundant and contain both good and bad images. Now, I mostly photograph food and sights while on vacation. And I have a lot of bad selfies with family and friends, much to my brother’s chagrin. No, you will not be seeing any of those here. 😀 However, I will share some of my flops.

When I decided to start blogging, I did research and bought a new camera. Who’s surprised? As part of this journey, I wanted to challenge myself to take better-quality photos to feature in my blog posts. Will I improve? I am not sure, but I want to keep trying. I am not aiming to become a professional photographer, and I won’t be signing up to do weddings, ever! However, I do want to take good-quality photos to feature on the blog, or at least less terrible ones 📸

I will focus on capturing images from my travels and for any recipes I post. Please be kind and humor me along the way. I’ll never be perfect, but that’s okay; it’s all part of the journey (see more here). In the future, I hope to look back and see my progress, and if I’m lucky, maybe one of my photos will grace the cover of a cookbook. My cookbook.

Here are some of my recent pictures.

Do you enjoy taking photos? What are your favorite pictures to capture? Any tips for an aspiring wannabe photographer? I hope you will share them with me in the comments.

Until My Next Musing!
